This sword and sorcery favorite stars Marc Singer as Dar, a young warrior with the power to communicate with animals. After he witnesses his people being slaughtered by a horde of barbarians Dar set out on an epic quest for vengeance.

The film is loosely based on the 1959 novel "The Beast Master" by Andre Norton.

The original camera negative (OCN) is believed to be lost after it was abandoned in a garage of a sold home. Hopefully it has avoided a dumpster and is instead in the hands of a film collector who will someday come forward to the delight of fans everywhere.

Marc Singer would reprise his role of Dar, the Beastmaster in 1991's Beastmaster 2: Through the Portal of Time and 1996's Beastmaster III: The Eye of Braxus. He also appeared as Dartanus in three Season 3 episodes of the Beastmaster TV series starring Daniel Goddard.

Co-star Tanya Roberts would later star in 1984's Sheena, Queen of the Jungle.

Cast as the bodyguard Seth, actor John Amos was previously seen in the Walt Disney 1973 comedy The World's Greatest Athlete starring Jan Michael Vincent as the jungleboy Nanu.

Exterior filming locations include Simi Valley and Lake Pyramid in California as well as Valley of Fire State Park in Overton, Nevada.
