This adventure film starring Peter O'Toole (Robinson Crusoe) and Richard Roundtree (Friday) was adapted from a 1970s British TV play based on the 1719 novel Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe.

The movie portrays Crusoe as a blunt Englishman destined to live out his life isolated and alone, while Friday is shown to be the more intelligent and empathic of the two men.

Best known for the role of John Shaft in Shaft (1971), actor Richard Roundtree made an appearance in George of the Jungle (1996) as Kwame, a jungle tour guide.

Peter O'Toole would later have roles in Zulu Dawn (1979) and Troy (2004).

Location filming was orginally intended to be done in Hawaii but was changed to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico due to production costs.

Richard Roundtree passed in 2023 at the age of 81.
