Based on the novels by Karl May, this German western was the first of a series of movies that starred former Tarzan Lex Barker in the role of Old Shatterhand along with co-star Pierre Brice as Winnetou.
The film's plot concerns the conflict between a railway company and the Mescalero Apaches during the construction of the Great Western Railroad which is being re-routed through the tribe's land.
Filmed at the Spandau Studios in Berlin and on location in Croatia (which at the time was part of Yugoslavia) near the city of Zadar.
After release, the movie became the highest-grossing film of 1963 in West Germany.
The film received a limited release in the United States by Columbia Pictures under the title of Apache Gold.
The English version titled Winnetou, the Warrior has a shorter running time as some scenes are either trimmed or dropped completely.
