Former Tarzan Lex Barker returns as Old Shatterhand and Pierre Brice again is cast as the Apache chief Winnetou in this German western based on the novels by author Karl May.

In the role of Rollins, actor Rik Battaglia was previously seen in The Minotaur, the Wild Beast of Crete (1960) starring Bob Mathias and Sandokan the Great (1963) starring Steve Reeves.

Filming locations included the Plitvic Lakes National Park and Zrmanja River Canyon in Croatia.

Director Harald Reinl also helmed 1965's The Last Tomahawk (Der letzte Mohikaner) which was based on The Last of the Mohicans by author James Fenimore Cooper.

The film was released in United States by Columbia Pictures in a dubbed version titled The Desperado Trail.
