This was the final film for special visual effects creator Ray Harryhausen. His previous credits include 1966's One Million Years B.C. and 1963's Jason and the Argonants.

After this film Harry Hamlin (Perseus) was considered for the role of Tarzan in 1984's Greystoke: the Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes but turned down the offer.

Ursula Andress previously starred in 1965's She and 1978's Slave of the Cannibal God.

Filming locations included Spain, Malta, Italy and Pinewood Studios in England.
