Adventure film inspired by the 1885 novel by H. Rider Haggard, starring Richard Chamberlain (Dream West) in the role of Allan Quatermain (a professional big game hunter and adventurer).
Filmed back-to-back with the sequel Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold, released to theaters in 1987.
A third film, Allan Quatermain and the Jewel of the East, was considered but never made.
Directed by J.Lee Thompson, whose earlier credits included Kings of the Sun (1963) and The White Buffalo (1977).
South African actor Ken Gampu (as Umbopo) previously was seen in The Naked Prey (1965) and the 1979 films Zulu Dawn and King Solomon's Treasure.
Appearing as a Mapaki Chief, actor Fidelis Cheza can also be seen as Chief Palala in the 1992 films The Lost World and Return to the Lost World.
Upon it's release to theaters on November 22, 1985, the film's opening weekend ranked #1 at the U.S box office.
Filmed on location in the Mashonaland region of northeastern Zimbabwe, Africa.
