Original German title: Chingachgook, die große Schlange.

Based on the 1841 novel The Deerslayer by James Fenimore Cooper, which was the fifth and last installment of the author's popular Leatherstocking Tales series.

Directed by Richard Groschopp, this "Red Western" starred Serbian-German actor/stuntman Gojko Mitic in the role of Chingachgook, a Mohican.

Created by Communist East German's legendary DEFA Film Studios, the Red Westerns made the Native Americans the heroes and portrayed the white settlers as villians.

Previous credits of Gojko Mitic included screen appearances in Apache Gold (1963), Old Shatterhand (1964) and The Desperado Trail (1965) -all starring former Tarzan actor Lex Barker.

The cast also includes Rolf Römer who had previously appeared with Gojko Mitic in The Sons of Great Bear (1966) and then later in Tecumseh (1972).

Filming included locations in Bulgaria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
