The movie follows Hongi (James Rolleston), the teenage son of a Maori chieftain who must avenge his father's murder so as to bring peace and honor to the souls of his loved ones after his tribe is slaughtered.

Cast as The Warrior, Maori actor Lawrence Makoare previously appeared as Atta in 1994's Rapa Nui.

The film won the New Zealand Film and Television Awards in 2014 for Best Costume Design, Best Make-Up Design and Best Visual Effects.

In 2020, a Maori language horror television series of the same name premiered on the Shudder and TVNZ streaming platforms.
