Based on the 1984 novel of the same name by David Nevin, this three-part television miniseries aired on the CBS television network.

Directed by Dick Lowry (Attila), starring Richard Chamberlain (Centennial) in the role of 19th century explorer and politician John C. Frémont.

The cast included Ben Johnson, whose many screen appearances include the films Mighty Joe Young (1949), Grayeagle (1977), The Town that Dreaded Sundown (1976) and Terror Train (1980).

Also appearing is actor George American Horse, whose other television credits include 11 episodes of Custer (1967) and the 2-part miniseries Son of the Morning Star (1991).

Filming locations included Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming and Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site, La Junta, Colorado.
