Based on the 1956 true story of Operation Auca, in which five American Christian missionaries were speared to death in an attempt to evangelize the Waodani people of the tropical rain forest of Eastern Ecuador.

Starring Chad Allen (Dr. Quinn, Medicine Women) in a dual role, that of Nate Saint (one of the missionaries killed) and also his adult son Steve who formed a kinship bond with the Waodani warrior Mincayani (who speared his father).

In the role of Mincayani, actor Louie Leonardo would later appear as War Chief in the season 2 episode Kiksuya of the television series Westworld in 2018.

Gil Birmingham (as Moipa) appeared as a warrior in House II: The Second Story (1987) and also had roles in Dreamkeeper (2003) and Crooked Arrows (2003).

Cast as Kimo, Jack Guzman previously co-starred on the 2002-2003 television series Power Rangers Wild Force as Danny Delgado (the Black Bison Ranger).

The film's director Jim Hanon also has made two documentaries on true story of Nate Saint and his son Steve: Beyond the Gates of Splendor (2002) and The Grandfathers (2011).

The production filmed on location in Colon, Panama.
