Actor Christopher Lambert became internationally famous for this protrayal of Tarzan (though the name Tarzan is never used in the film's dialogue) in this adaption based on the Edgar Rice Burroughs' 1912 novel Tarzan of the Apes.
Also considered for the film's role of Tarzan were actors Harry Hamlin, Julian Sands and Viggo Mortensen.
Directed by Hugh Hudson, the movie also features Sir Ralph Richardson (in one of his final performances) and Andie MacDowell (in her movie debut).
The studio ended up cutting about 25 minutes of footage from the jungle scenes of Tarzan growing up.
Based on revenue, it became the 15th most popular film at the box office in 1984 and was the first Tarzan movie to receive an Academy Award nomination: Best Supporting Actor, Best Screenplay (based on material from another medium) and Best Makeup.

Prior to the release of the film, Sir Ralph Richardson passed in 1983 at the age of 81.
