Filmed in Super Technirama 70 and released in Italy as Ercole alla conquista di Atlantide (Hercules and the Conquest of Atlantis), the film was not theatrically shown in the United States until 1963. (The soundtrack of the U.S. version included musical cues from 1954's Creature From the Black Lagoon.)

This was bodybuilder Reg Park's first sword and sandal film, playing a strong (but somewhat sleepy) Hercules. He would go on to star in four more peplum movies, including 1961's Hercules in the Haunted World and 1965's Hercules the Avenger.

Location photography included Palinuro, South of Naples, which was later a filming site for 1963's Jason and the Argonauts.
