Actor Claudio Cassinelli previously appeared in 1976's Slave of the Cannibal God. He later played the role of Zeus in Hercules (1983) and The Adventures of Hercules (1985), both starring Lou Ferrigno.

The film's director, Sergio Martino, was an assistant director on Hercules Against Rome (1964) which starred Alan Steel.

Filming locations in Italy included Neptune's Grotto, a cave on the island of Sardinia.

The film was both re-edited and re-titled when released in the United States, first as Something Waits in the Dark (1980) and then as Screamers (1981).

In 1995 a sequel, The Fishmen and Their Queen was made using extensive footage from the orginal.
