A complex story of cultural identity set against the harsh natural surroundings of the Australian Outback.

The Northern Territory Story was the original script title of this Australian film written, produced and directed by Charles Chauvel (his final film).

This movie was the first to star two Aboriginal actors, Robert Tudawali and Ngarla Kunoth (later known as Rosalie Kunoth-Monks), in leading roles.

Australia filming locations included Nitmiluk National Park and Katherine Gorge National Park (Northern Territory).

The final roll of film negative was destroyed in a plane crash (having been sent to England for developing), thus requiring the director to refilm scenes at the Kanangra Walls and Jenolan Caves (New South Wales).

Also notable as being the first Australian feature film to be photographed in color.

Born in 1928, Robert Tudawali passed 26 July 1967.

Ngarla Kunoth passed in 2022 at the age of 85.

Charles Chauvel passed in 1959 at the age of 62.
