Released to theaters in 3D the film starred actor Kellan Lutz as the muscular demi-god who was the son of Zeus.

Kellan Lutz previously was cast as Poseidon in The Immortals (2011) and voiced the Lord of the Jungle in the 3D animated Tarzan (2013).

The film was released six months prior to another 2014 Hercules film: the one starring Dwayne Johnson in the title role.

The New York Times reviewer A.O. Scott said of the film: "delivers what it promises, which is muscular guys in skimpy clothes fighting and howling".

Filmed on location in the Republic of Bulgaria, Southeast Europe.
