Based on a 1905 story by Jules Verne (The Lighthouse at the End of the World), this adventure stars Kirk Douglas (Spartacus) as a lighthouse keeper and Yul Brenner (Kings of the Sun) as the leader of a crew of pirates.

Fernando Rey (as Captain Moriz) previously appeared in the peplum films The Revolt of the Slaves (1960), Goliath Against the Giants (1961) and My Son the Hero (1962).

Cast as Malapinha, actor Raul Castro later seen in two Charles Bronson westerns: Red Sun (1971) and Chato's Land (1972).

Co-produced by Alexander and Ilya Salkind, names perhaps best known to film audiences for 1973's The Three Musketeers and 1978's Superman - The Movie.

Filming locations include the Cap de Creus Natural Park, Catalonia, Spain.
