Starring Dustin Hoffman, the film is based on the 1964 novel Little Big Man by Thomas Berger.

Actor Cal Bellini (Younger Bear) also appeared in 1980's The Mountain Men as Cross Otter and was also cast in an episode of the short lived TV series Young Dan'l Boone in 1977. (Cal Bellini passed in 2017 at the age of 81.)

Montana filming locations included Little Bighorn River and the Crow Indian Reservation.
