A live-action adaption based on the Mattel franchise stars Dolph Lundgren (Red Scorpion) as the heroic He-Man and Frank Langella (1979's Dracula) as supervillain Skeletor.

In the role of Blade, actor Anthony Charles De Longis previous films include Circle of Iron (1978) and The Sword and the Sorcerer (1982).

Director Gary Goddard was one of the credited writers for the screenplay of 1981's Tarzan the Ape Man starring Miles O'Keeffe.

California filming locations included Malibu Creek State Park, Calabasas and Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park, Agua Dulc.

A planned sequel titled Masters of the Universe 2: Revenge of the Beast was later abandoned when the liscensing rights were not continued, with the already-made sets and costumes used instead for the 1989 sci-fi film Cyborg starring Jean-Claude Van Damme.
