This 14-part German television series starred Pierre Brice as Native American chief Winnetou, a role he portrayed previously in eleven films (1962-68).
German actor Eric Ho appears in the role of Tashunko, a young Comanche.
First broadcast as fourteen half-hour episodes on German television May 2 - June 13, 1980.
In France the series was shown on TV as seven 1-hour episodes.
The television episodes were also released as a 7-part radio play with narration by German actor Horst Frank.
Filming took place January 22 - April 28, 1979 and utilized locations near Apache reservations in Mexico (including Durango).
In 1998 Pierre Brice returned as Winnetou in the two-part miniseries Winnetous Rückkehr (Winnetou's Return).
