A Canadian-French co-production adaptated from the 1911 Belgian novel The Quest for Fire by J.-H. Rosny (pseudonym of brothers Joseph Henri Honoré Boex and Séraphin Justin François Boex).

Directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud and set in the Paleolithic era (Old Stone Age) the film stars Everett McGill (as Naoh) and Ron Perlman (as Amoukar).

The cast included actor Nameer El-Kadi (as Gaw) who later appeared on screen in an ape suit in 1997's George of the Jungle.

Professional wrestlers Antonio Barichievich, Adrian Street and Luke McMasters appear as Kzamm tribesmen.

Varied filming locations included Tsavo National Park and Lake Magadi in Kenya, Grieg's Caves, Lion's Head, Ontario, Canada, and the Cairngorm Mountains in the eastern Highlands of Scotland.

Won the Best Makeup category at the 55th Academy Awards and the 36th BAFTA Awards (British Academy of Film and Television Arts).

The film was released February 12, 1982 in the United States.
