Filmed on location in Mexico, this was the first TV-movie ever produced for the pay cable television industry, premiring on Showtime December 18th, 1982 as Falcon's Gold.

The title was changed to Robbers of the Sacred Mountain when the film was released theatrically overseas and on VHS video.

Based on a short story titled Challenger's Gold by author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (best known as the creator of "Sherlock Holmes").

Actor Simon MacCorkindale (Hank Richards) also appeared as Lord Mikah in 1982's The Sword and the Sorcerer and as Philip FitzRoyce in 1983's Jaws 3-D.
