Written and directed by Samuel Fuller (The Command), this western classic stars Rod Steiger (The Illustrated Man), Brian Keith (The Mountain Men), and Charles Bronson (Chato's Land).

The film portrayed the Native American in a more repectful manner that most movie and television westerns of the time and explored such complex themes as hatred vs. reason and man's search for identity.

Jay C. Flippen (cast as Walking Coyote) also appeared later the same year as Old Tom Hutter in 1957's The Deerslayer starring former Tarzan actor Lex Barker.

In the role of Crazy Wolf, H.M. Wynant would later be cast as Yellow Bull in the 1958 Walt Disney western Tonka starring Sal Mineo.

Also in the film is Frank Dekova, who may perhaps be best remembered by many for his portrayal of Chief Wild Eagle on the 1960's comedy television series F-Troop.

Actor Neyle Morrow previously appeared in the Johnny Weissmuller films Tarzan and the Leopard Woman (1947) and Jungle Jim (1948)... in addition to Man-Eater of Kumaon (1948) starring Sabu.

Both Rod Steiger and Jay C. Flippen were cast in the Rogers and Hammerstein musical film Oklahoma! (1955).

Filming locations in Arizona included Mount Bangs (Paiute Wilderness Area) and the Virgin River Gorge canyon (southwest of St. George, Utah).

Rod Steiger passed in 2002 at the age of 77.

Jay C. Flippen passed in 1971 at the age of 71.

Neyl Morrow passed in 2006 at the age of 91.

Samuel Fuller passed in 1997 at the age of 85.
