Original Italian title: Sandokan, la tigre di Mompracem (Sandokan, the Tiger of Mompracem).

Starring Steve Reeve (Hercules) this was the first film to be based on the character of Sandokan, the pirate-prince of a series of swashbuckler novels by Italian author Emilio Salgari.

Additional screen credits of Andrea Bosic (cast here as Yanez) include Sword of the Conqueror (1961), Damon and Pythias (1962) and Temple of the White Elephant (1964)

In the role of Sambigliong, actor Rik Battaglia later appeared alongside former Tarzan actor Lex Barker in Old Shatterhand (1964), The Treasure of the Aztecs (1965) and The Pyramid of the Sun God (1965).

Steve Reeves, Andrea Bosic and Rik Battaglia would all return for the 1964 sequel I pirati della Malesia (The Pirates of Malaysia).

The production filmed on the South Asian island of Ceylon (Sri Lanka).
