Original German title: Die Söhne der großen Bärin (The Sons of the Great She-Bear).

The film is adapted from a series of six novels by German author Liselotte Welskopf-Henrich, who was a life-long supporter of Native American causes.

Starring Serbian-German actor Gojko Mitic (Apaches) in the lead role of Tokei-ihto, a Dakota warrior.

Rolf Römer (cast in the role of Tobias) later co-starred with Gojko Mitic in the 1967 East German western Chingachgook, die grosse Schlange (Chingachgook, The Great Snake).

Exterior filming locations include Saxony-Anhalt, Germany and the country of Montenegro in Southeast Europe.

Liselotte Welskopf-Henrich passed in 1979 at the age of 77.

Rolf Römer passed in 2000 at the age of 64.
