episodes / Spartacus: Gods of the Arena / 2011 Starz

This television miniseries was a prequel to Spartacus: Blood and Sand which premired in 2010 on the Starz cable TV channel.

Australian actor Dustin Clare is cast as Gannicus (a Celtic gladiator). He would continue the role in Spartacus: Vengeance (2012) and Spartacus: War of the Damned (2013).

The prequel series was produced as the second season of Spartacus was being delayed due to it's star Andy Whitfield battling non-Hodgkin lymphoma. (Series creators expanded a planned flashback episode into the 6-part miniseries.)

Australian-New Zealand actor Manu Bennett is cast as Crixus (a Gallic gladiatorial recruit). He would appear in the role of Crixus in 37 of the 39 episodes of the Spartacus four-part series.

In 2011, Manu Bennett was cast as the lead in the Australian fantasy film Sinbad and The Minotaur.

New Zealand actor Antonio Te Maioha is cast as Barca (a Carthaginian gladiator). He originated the role in Spartacus: Blood and Sand (2010), the first season of the series.

In 1999, Antonio Te Maiooha appeared on the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World television series in the episode Salvation (S1.E6).

The series was filmed in Auckland, New Zealand.
