This was the sixth and final film in the MGM Tarzan series starring Johnny Weissmuller, and would be the studio's last Tarzan film until the 1957 release of Tarzan and the Lost Safari starring Gordon Scott.

This was the last appearance of Maureen O'Sullivan as Jane.

Filmed mostly on the backlot at Metro-Goldwyn-Studios in California, the working title of the film was Tarzan Against the World.

Johnny Sheffield returned for the third time in the role of Boy.

The film features an uncredited appearance (as a circus roustabout) of Elmo Lincoln, who was the first actor to play Tarzan when he starred in the silent 1918 classic Tarzan of the Apes.

Also uncredited (as a circus worker) is Harry Monty, who perhaps may be best remembered for his role as one of the flying monkeys 1939's The Wizard of Oz.

Film critic Theodore Strauss of The New York Times wrote: "In Tarzan's case, clothes do not make the man".

Maureen O'Sullivan passed in 1998 at the age of 87.
