Based on the Who's 1969 rock opera album, this was the first of two films released in 1975 directed by Ken Russell and starring Roger Daltrey (the other being Lisztomania).

The movie co-starred Oliver Reed (The Curse of the Werewolf), Ann-Margret, and featured an appearance by Tina Turner (Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome).

Ann-Margret received an 1975 Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her role of Nora Walker.
