American actor and former Tarzan star Lex Barker was cast as Old Shatterhand, a frontiersman. French actor Pierre Brice portrayed Winnetou, an Apache warrior.

Pierre Brice passed in 2015 at the age of 86.

Filming locations included the Paklenica National Park in Zagreb County, Croatia.

Cast as Grosser Wolf, actor Jozo Kovacevic would later appear uncredited as the Ponca chief in 1964's Winnetou II (aka: Winnetou: The Red Gentleman).
